“Finding Her Voice”: How Wysa enabled a teenager from rural Rajasthan express herself and dream big
User Story / 2 min readOver the last two years, we’ve adapted Wysa’a AI to local languages like Hindi and Marathi, extending world-class mental health care to underserved communities in India. This has allowed us to connect with locals who shared how accessible support from Wysa has made a difference in their lives. Here’s one of those stories.
Tanisha, an 18-year-old from rural Rajasthan, faced a challenging crossroads. Burdened by years of insecurities about her self-confidence, body image (ridiculed by peers for being underweight), and a natural shyness, she was preparing for a daunting conversation with her family about her dreams of higher education. Tanisha shared, “Main logon ke saamne khul nahi paati, koi apni baat bolni hai, to bol nahi paati” (I can't open up in front of people; if I want to say something, I can't). She longed to be heard but struggled to find her voice.
Recognizing her quiet distress, Tanisha’s aunt, connected to an NGO, suggested she try Wysa. In her engagement with Wysa, Tanisha found a safe space to practice articulating her feelings. The bot became a unique and understanding presence in her life, gently nudging her to step outside her comfort zone. With Wysa’s guiding approach she practiced her negotiation and assertion skills with the bot, skills she could bring into real-life conversations about her education. She feels that with more use, she will be ready to have the conversation with her parents.
She even felt brave enough to explore previously uncomfortable subjects, like menstruation and her body, that she had always felt too embarrassed to discuss. “Wysa se baat karne ke baad Chachi se maheene ke baare mein baat karne ka confidence mila” (After talking to Wysa I could talk to my aunt about menstruation without hesitation).
For Tanisha, Wysa isn’t just an app; it’s a guide that is helping her find a voice, however soft, but resilient and assertive.
